KANSAS SHERIFFS ASSOCIATION
BOARD & GENERAL MEETING
FEBRUARY 6, 2008
HOLIDAY INN WEST
TOPEKA, KANSAS
The meeting was called to order at 1:00 PM 2/6/2008 by First Vice President Sheriff Tracy Ploutz. Sheriff John Fletcher, the 2008 Association President is attending the FBI Academy in Quantico Virginia.
The minutes were approved as submitted on a motion from Sheriff Odell, second by Sheriff Ridley.
The Treasurers report was given by Secretary/Treasurer Sheriff Ken McGovern. A motion to approve the report was make by Sheriff Jensen, second by Sheriff Shoemaker, motion carried.
We deviated from the agenda because some principle presenters were late arriving. The first discussion was concerning the location of the fall training conference.
The Executive Board, the Chairman of the conference committee, Sheriff Henderson, Shawnee County Sheriff Dick Barta and KLETC representative Mark Damitio toured the Ramada Inn in Topeka. We found the sleeping rooms to be recently upgraded as well as the meeting rooms.
Director of sales, Linda Shove Morgan and General Manager, Kevin William gave a room price of $73.00 per night including a hot breakfast, plus tax.. They would cop all the meeting rooms, hospitality room and comp 1 room for every 50 room nights sold. We have worked with Linda before and find her accommodating and egger work with us.
The committee asked for a vote of the general membership. Sheriff Rogers made a motion that we hold the fall conference at the Ramada in Topeka, Sheriff Ridley second, motion carried.
Lt. Colonel Terry Maple who will become the Superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol spoke to the membership. He assured them that he has no plans for big changes and pledged the continued support of the Kansas Sheriffs. He stated he plans to beef up the aircraft division. He stated two Majors are retiring and will be replaced. Colonel Maple has been a big supporter and friend to KSA and I am sure he will continue to be so.
KBI Director Bob Blecka stated that he plans to appoint a new field supervisor and he will make that announcement soon. Other then that not much is going on other then their usual stuff.
There was some discussion about the legislative committee meeting earlier in the year to review some of the issues coming up and to plan strategy. Sheriff Barta made a motion that we have a legislative meting early in January, Sheriff Shoemaker second, motion carried.
The remaining time of the board meeting was used by Legislative Chairperson Frank Denning, Co-chair, Sandy Horton, Lobbyist Jeff Bottenberg and Captain Bob Keller of Denning’s staff. A power point presentation was presented on some of the subjects that may come up during this session. This presentation was sent by email to the KSA office and was in turn emailed to all the Sheriffs in the State.
With nothing further to discuss, we adjourned.
